Why it works

Walnuts provide alpha-linolenic acid, the plant omega-3, along with polyphenols that support healthier LDL and endothelial function, while oats add beta-glucan soluble fiber that binds cholesterol in the gut. Mixed berries contribute anthocyanin polyphenols associated with lower blood pressure and improved arterial flexibility, and the Greek yogurt base swaps refined-carb, sugary snacks for protein and potassium with no added salt. Sweetness comes mostly from the fruit and a touch of honey rather than refined sugar.

Evidence

Reflects DASH and Mediterranean-pattern evidence for berry anthocyanins, nut ALA and polyphenols, and oat beta-glucan improving blood pressure and lipids.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups plain nonfat or 2% Greek yogurt
  • 2 tsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup mixed fresh or frozen blueberries and raspberries
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 3 tbsp rolled oats, lightly toasted
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Method

  1. Line a small sheet pan or plate with parchment paper.
  2. Stir the Greek yogurt together with the honey, vanilla, and cinnamon, then spread it about 1/4 inch thick over the parchment.
  3. Scatter the berries, toasted oats, and chopped walnuts evenly across the surface and press them in lightly.
  4. Freeze for at least 3 hours until solid, then break into shards and serve straight from the freezer; store the rest frozen in an airtight container.
