Why it works

Plain yogurt with live cultures delivers Lactobacillus and Streptococcus strains plus the enzyme bacterial lactase, which is why many people who are lactose-intolerant tolerate yogurt better than milk. Cooking the apple softens its cell walls and concentrates soluble pectin, a gel-forming fiber that is generally gentler than a raw apple skin for a sensitive gut, while cinnamon adds warmth without irritation. Ground flax contributes soluble mucilage and a little omega-3, rounding out an easy, low-effort snack rather than a rich or fried one.

Evidence

Consistent with guidance that yogurt with live active cultures can improve lactose digestion, one of the better-supported probiotic-food claims, and with the broad role of soluble fibers such as apple pectin in supporting stool consistency.

Ingredients

  • 1.25 cups (300 g) plain live-culture yogurt
  • 1 apple, peeled, cored and diced
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 2 tbsp rolled oats, lightly toasted
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional)

Method

  1. Put the diced apple, water and cinnamon in a small pan and cook over low-medium heat, stirring now and then, for 6 to 8 minutes until the apple is soft and the liquid is syrupy.
  2. Let the stewed apple cool for a couple of minutes so it does not curdle the yogurt.
  3. Toast the rolled oats in a dry pan for a minute or two until fragrant and lightly golden.
  4. Divide the yogurt between two small cups or bowls and spoon the warm apple over the top.
  5. Finish each with the ground flax, toasted oats, and a small drizzle of honey if you want a little more sweetness.
