Why it works

Citrus segments are a rare naturally folate-rich fruit, and folate is the single best-supported nutrient in preconception nutrition for reducing neural-tube-defect risk once pregnancy begins. The Greek yogurt supplies full-fat dairy and protein tied to reproductive health in some cohorts, while the seeds add vitamin E and zinc, and the live cultures support the gut microbiome that increasingly appears connected to hormonal balance.

Evidence

Anchored in folate's well-established preconception role in public-health guidance and in dairy findings from the Nurses' Health Study II; the microbiome-hormone link is emerging and not yet definitive. Dietary folate rarely reaches the level clinicians target with supplements, so treat this as a complement to, not a replacement for, medical advice.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup plain whole-milk Greek yogurt
  • 1 navel orange, peeled and segmented
  • 1/4 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon raw sunflower seeds
  • 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 pinch grated orange zest

Method

  1. Toast the sunflower seeds in a dry pan over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes until lightly golden, then let cool.
  2. Spoon half of the Greek yogurt into a glass or small bowl.
  3. Layer on half of the orange segments and sliced strawberries.
  4. Add the remaining yogurt, then the rest of the fruit.
  5. Scatter the toasted sunflower seeds and hemp seeds over the top.
  6. Finish with a light drizzle of honey and a pinch of orange zest.
