Kefir, Banana and Ginger Overnight Oat Bowl
Rolled oats soaked overnight in kefir with mashed ripe banana, chia, grated ginger, and cinnamon, then topped the next morning with soft stewed pear and a spoonful of ground flax.
Why it works
Kefir carries a genuinely diverse community of live bacteria and yeasts, and small trials suggest fermented milks can help populate your gut with lactic-acid bacteria, though results swing with the product and the person drinking it. Oats and chia add beta-glucan and mucilaginous soluble fiber, gelling with water to soften stool and feed the microbes already living in there. Ripe banana chips in gentle, low-irritant carbohydrate and a little resistant starch. Fresh ginger has centuries of tradition behind it for settling a stomach, plus modest evidence that it speeds gastric emptying, which is why some people swear it eases that heavy, sluggish feeling after a meal.
Fiber and fermented food are the two pillars of basically every gut-health dietary pattern out there. Soluble fibers like oat beta-glucan are among the best-studied for stool consistency. Regular fermented-food intake tracks with greater gut microbial diversity in both observational and small interventional work.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (90 g) rolled oats
- 1.25 cups (300 ml) plain unsweetened kefir
- 1 ripe banana, mashed
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 ripe pear, peeled, cored and diced
- 2 tbsp water
- 2 tsp ground flaxseed
- 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
Method
- In a bowl or two jars, stir together the oats, kefir, mashed banana, chia seeds, grated ginger and cinnamon until evenly combined.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight, or at least 6 hours, so the oats and chia soften and thicken.
- In the morning, gently stew the diced pear with the water in a small pan over low heat for 4 to 5 minutes until soft and just translucent, then let cool slightly.
- Loosen the soaked oats with a splash more kefir if you prefer them looser, then divide between two bowls.
- Top each bowl with the warm stewed pear, a teaspoon of ground flax, and a light drizzle of honey if your morning needs a little more sweetness.
