Why it works
Canned tuna is a complete, leucine-rich protein that also carries creatine naturally found in animal muscle tissue, directly supporting the phosphocreatine energy system used in strength work. The cannellini beans and rye add slow, high-fiber carbohydrate to top off glycogen, and the olive oil plus tuna's omega-3s deliver unsaturated fats that support a healthy lipid profile, while the beans' soluble fiber and potassium favor blood pressure.
Evidence
Builds on Mediterranean-diet evidence for oily fish, legumes, and olive oil, and on the role of dietary creatine from fish and meat in supporting high-intensity performance.
Ingredients
- 1 can (100 g drained) tuna in water, drained
- 1/2 cup (80 g) canned cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 slice dense whole-grain rye bread (about 45 g)
- 1 tbsp plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
- Juice of half a lemon, plus salt and cracked black pepper to taste
Method
- In a bowl, mash the cannellini beans coarsely with a fork, leaving some texture.
- Add the drained tuna, Greek yogurt, olive oil, and lemon juice, then mix and season with salt and pepper.
- Toast the rye bread and pile the tuna-bean smash on top.
- Finish with extra cracked pepper and a squeeze more lemon if desired.
