The Gardener
There is a cutting rooting in a jar on the sill and a project on the table that is neither finished nor abandoned. She is easy to start things with. Wood is the east in the tradition, where the day begins.
What balances it
Metal checks wood in the cycle. In a room that means one clean pale surface or a piece of brass, which is enough to keep a green room from going jungly.
Bedroom
A green room goes wrong when it is all one green. Depth belongs behind your head, the pale belongs on the walls, and the sharp yellow-green belongs on something you can carry out of the room.
- Walls
- Serpentine taken right down, closer to grey-green than to leaf. Matt rather than eggshell, so the colour shifts with the hour instead of bouncing the light back at you.
- Behind the bed
- Malachite, the deepest of the four, on the headboard or the wall it stands against. Weight behind the head is the oldest bedroom rule there is, and colour can do the work of a solid headboard.
- Bedding
- Undyed linen, oatmeal, bone. Green on green on green loses the shape of the bed.
- One movable thing
- Peridot, the sharp one, on a throw or a stack of spines. It is a colour you want for an hour rather than all night.
Light
Warm bulbs, low down, nothing overhead. Green under cool ceiling light turns grey and slightly municipal.
Where it goes wrong
Plants. The old worry about them taking your air overnight is arithmetic that does not hold, since a sleeping person outbreathes a room full of pots many times over. What they genuinely change is humidity, so four or five in a small bedroom is a humidifier you did not plan for.
Living room
This is the room where wood can be wood. It is the palette that wants something growing in it, and a green room with nothing alive reads as paint.
- Walls
- Keep them pale. The green here comes from leaves, and leaves against a green wall disappear.
- The big piece
- Jade or sage, in a weave with visible texture. Flat green upholstery at that scale goes vinyl very quickly.
- Wood
- Light oak, ash, rattan. Wood feeds wood in the cycle, and it also simply works.
- Accent
- Malachite on one chair, one pile of cushions, or the inside of a bookcase.
Light
As much daylight as the window gives, then warm lamps at eye level after dark.
Where it goes wrong
Vertical is the wood shape: a tall plant, a tall bookcase, a floor lamp on a slim stem. A room of low horizontal furniture in green reads as earth wearing green, and it sits heavier than you meant it to.
