A stoneware mug of pale caramel-colored decaf coffee with warm milk, a thin ribbon of honey pooling near the rim, resting on a folded linen napkin on a dark wood nightstand beside an unlit candle, soft warm lamplight falling from one side, shot close and slightly overhead with steam rising and a shallow blurred background.

Why it works

Decaffeinated coffee isn't caffeine-free: an 8-ounce cup carries roughly 2 to 15 milligrams depending on the brand and brew method, commonly closer to 5 or 7, against about 95 milligrams in a regular cup. Caffeine's half-life in a healthy adult runs about five hours, which is why a 2 p.m. coffee can still be a quarter-strength dose at bedtime, but a decaf cup barely needs the half-life math: even with zero elimination, the starting dose is already far under the 100-plus milligrams that sleep studies use to show disrupted sleep. The warm milk contributes a little tryptophan, and the honey's sugar triggers a small insulin release that clears competing amino acids from the blood, a mechanism that can modestly favor tryptophan crossing into the brain. The bigger effect is probably the routine itself: the same cup, the same steps, in the same order each night, which is what sleep-hygiene guidance means by a wind-down cue.

Evidence

The caffeine figures and half-life come from established pharmacology. The tryptophan-and-carbohydrate pathway is real biochemistry, but there isn't strong trial evidence that a cup of warm milk and honey measurably shortens the time it takes to fall asleep; the sedative claim here is closer to a comforting bedtime tradition than a proven effect.

Ingredients

  • 240 ml (1 cup) strongly brewed decaf coffee
  • 180 ml (3/4 cup) whole milk (or oat milk)
  • 1 tbsp (21 g) honey
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon, for dusting

Method

  1. Brew the decaf coffee using your usual method (drip, French press, or moka pot), a little stronger than you'd drink it black, and keep it warm.
  2. Warm the milk in a small saucepan over low heat, swirling often, until steaming with small bubbles at the edge. Don't let it boil; a full boil scalds the milk and forms a skin.
  3. Remove the milk from the heat and stir in the honey and vanilla until the honey dissolves.
  4. Pour the milk into a mug, add the coffee, and stir once. Dust with cinnamon, then drink slowly as the last thing before bed, away from a screen.
