Why it works

Period cramps come mostly from prostaglandins, the local signaling molecules that make the uterus contract, which is exactly why ibuprofen helps: it blocks their production. Two things in this glass work the same direction, with weaker but real evidence behind them. Ginger has several small randomized trials showing pain reduction comparable to common anti-inflammatories, at around 750 to 2000 mg daily in the first days of bleeding. Magnesium, which pumpkin seeds and cacao are both dense in, has trial support for cutting cramping and premenstrual mood symptoms. Raspberries add fiber and anthocyanins, and the pumpkin seeds bring iron and zinc, which matters across a cycle with heavy bleeding.

Evidence

Ginger for period pain has repeated small randomized trials behind it with meaningful effect sizes. Magnesium has moderate support for cramps and premenstrual symptoms. Both rest on small studies. Pain that persists or gets worse needs a clinician, not a smoothie.

Ingredients

  • 150 g frozen raspberries
  • 280 ml unsweetened soy milk
  • 2 tbsp (18 g) shelled pumpkin seeds
  • 1.5 tbsp (8 g) raw cacao powder
  • 2 tsp finely grated fresh ginger
  • 1 pitted Medjool date

Method

  1. Pour the liquid into the blender first, then add the soft ingredients, then anything frozen or hard on top. Blending in that order keeps the blades in liquid instead of spinning against a frozen block.
  2. Blend the pumpkin seeds with the milk first for a full minute. Whole seeds left to the end stay as grit no matter how long you run the blender afterwards.
  3. Blend on low until it breaks up, then on high for 45 to 60 seconds, until no flecks remain and the texture is even.
  4. Taste and adjust: a splash more liquid if it is too thick to pour, a squeeze of citrus if it tastes flat, a few more ice cubes if you want it colder.
  5. Drink it soon after blending. The texture separates within about ten minutes, and the colour dulls as the cut surfaces oxidise.
