Reclined Bound-Angle to Gentle Twist Flow
A calm, floor-based flow between a supported reclined bound-angle position and a gentle supine twist, opening your hips and easing your low back while slow breathing talks your nervous system down.
Why it works
Gentle yoga sits right at the intersection of two things that matter for fertility: circulation and stress physiology. Opening your hips and moving your lumbar spine and pelvis encourages blood flow through the pelvic region, and slow, breath-led movement activates the parasympathetic side of your nervous system, turning down the chronic stress signaling that can dampen the reproductive axis. Here's the real complication: whether psychological stress meaningfully lowers fertility itself is mixed and genuinely debated. Where the evidence is much stronger is quality of life and distress during fertility treatment, where mind-body and yoga programs consistently help people cope. Men get the same relaxation and pelvic-mobility benefit, no asterisk. Think of this as a restorative counterweight to your strength and walking days, not a workout in its own right, and it's low-intensity enough to do often.
How to do it
- Sit on the mat, then lie back with your spine long, and bring the soles of your feet together so your knees fall gently open into a diamond shape.
- Slide a cushion under each knee so the inner thighs can release without strain, rest your arms at your sides, and breathe slowly for several full breaths.
- To transition, draw your knees back together, then hug both knees toward your chest for a moment to reset the low back.
- Let both knees lower slowly to one side into a gentle supine twist, keeping both shoulders resting on the mat and turning your gaze the opposite way if it is comfortable.
- Breathe softly into the stretch for several slow breaths, feeling the low back and outer hip lengthen without forcing the knees down.
- Bring the knees back to center, repeat the twist to the other side, then return to the supported bound-angle position to finish.
Dose: Hold each position for 5-10 slow breaths, about 1-2 minutes, flowing through the full sequence 2-3 times, most days of the week. Nothing here should ever feel like effort.
⚠ This is educational information for discussion with your clinician, not medical or fertility advice. Move only into a mild, comfortable stretch and never force the knees toward the floor, which can strain the inner thigh or knee. If you are pregnant, later-pregnancy positions flat on your back may be uncomfortable or discouraged, so confirm suitable positioning with your care team. Skip or modify the twist if you have significant low-back, hip, or SI-joint issues.
