In the Los Angeles families study, women whose language described their homes as cluttered or unfinished had flatter daily cortisol slopes, the pattern associated with chronic stress. It is a correlation in a small sample, and it points at how a home feels to live in rather than how it photographs.
The one square foot that matters
The surface inside the door collects everything and sets the tone for arrival. A tray, a hook, and somewhere for shoes handles most of it, and it takes about a minute a day to keep.
The rule that makes it stick
Anything that leaves the house daily gets a home within arm of the door. Everything else lives elsewhere. Most entryway clutter is objects stored where they are used once a week, not once a day.
