Why it works

Montmorency tart cherries contain melatonin at a level that's unusual for a food, plus procyanidins that appear to slow the breakdown of tryptophan, leaving more of it around for serotonin and melatonin synthesis. The trials are small, but they measure the right things: time to fall asleep, total sleep time, and actigraphy instead of relying on self-report alone. Walnuts add alpha-linolenic acid and their own small quantity of melatonin. This lands as a breakfast rather than a bedtime dish because tart cherry's circadian effect shows up across the whole day, not just in the hour after you eat it, and because oats do more for the rest of your day at breakfast than they ever would at night.

Evidence

Tart cherry juice for sleep has several small randomized trials, most under thirty participants, showing modest gains in sleep time. The effect is real and it is small. Anyone expecting a sedative is going to be disappointed. Kefir and oats are here for the meal, not for the sleep evidence.

Ingredients

  • 200 g rolled oats
  • 500 ml plain kefir
  • 150 ml tart cherry juice, unsweetened
  • 80 g dried tart cherries
  • 60 g walnuts, roughly chopped
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 apple, coarsely grated

Method

  1. Stir the oats, kefir, cherry juice, dried cherries, flaxseed and cinnamon together in a large bowl.
  2. Grate the apple in last, skin and all, and fold it through before it browns.
  3. Divide between four jars, seal, and refrigerate overnight. It needs six hours to go from wet oats to bircher.
  4. Add the walnuts on the morning you eat each jar rather than at the start of the week, so they stay crisp.
