Five clear glass jars of thick pale oats streaked with dark red tart cherry, lined up on a pale marble counter beside a small dish of raw green pumpkin seeds, in soft morning window light, shot straight on with the front jar in sharp focus and the row behind gently blurred.

Why it works

Montmorency tart cherries are one of the rare whole foods that measurably contain melatonin, and their anthocyanins appear to slow down how fast your body breaks it back down. Combining tart cherry juice with dried tart cherries in the soaking liquid puts more melatonin in the jar than a few cherries scattered on top ever could. Oats add a smaller amount of melatonin of their own, plus beta-glucan, a soluble fiber that slows digestion and blunts the morning rise in blood sugar, part of why a jar this size holds you through a morning at your desk. Kefir supplies tryptophan and calcium, the cofactor your body uses to convert tryptophan into serotonin and then melatonin, plus live bacterial cultures that small trials tie to a more diverse gut microbiome. Pumpkin seeds, kept raw and scattered on right before you eat, add magnesium and zinc for nervous-system relaxation, plus a further small dose of tryptophan.

Evidence

Tart cherry for sleep has several small randomized trials with consistent, modest effects, though the studies run short and the sample sizes stay small. The kefir and pumpkin seed contributions rest on thinner evidence. Fermented foods and gut diversity, and magnesium and sleep, are both active research areas, just not tested here as directly as the cherry trials are.

Ingredients

  • 250 g (2 1/2 cups) old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 750 ml (3 cups) plain kefir
  • 150 ml (2/3 cup) unsweetened tart cherry juice
  • 75 g (1/2 cup) dried tart cherries, roughly chopped
  • 50 g (1/3 cup) raw pumpkin seeds (pepitas), for topping
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup, optional
  • Pinch of fine sea salt

Method

  1. Whisk the kefir, tart cherry juice, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt together in a large bowl or jug.
  2. Stir in the rolled oats and dried tart cherries until every bit of oat is wet, scraping down the side of the bowl so nothing sits dry.
  3. Stir in the maple syrup now if you want the whole batch sweetened, or skip it and sweeten individual jars later.
  4. Divide evenly between five jars, about 180 ml each, seal, and refrigerate overnight or at least 6 hours until thick and spoonable.
  5. Store the pumpkin seeds separately and scatter a spoonful over each jar right before eating, so they stay crisp instead of softening in the fridge.
