Live-Yogurt Cup with Stewed Cinnamon Apple and Flax
Plain live-culture yogurt spooned over warm cinnamon-stewed apple, finished with ground flaxseed and a few toasted oats. Soft, soothing, built for a gut that needs a minute.
Why it works
Plain yogurt with live cultures delivers Lactobacillus and Streptococcus strains plus the enzyme bacterial lactase, which is why plenty of people who can't handle milk do fine with yogurt. Cooking the apple softens its cell walls and concentrates soluble pectin, a gel-forming fiber that treats a sensitive gut far more gently than raw apple skin does, while cinnamon adds warmth without any of the irritation. Ground flax brings soluble mucilage and a little omega-3 to round things out. Easy, low-effort, nothing rich or fried anywhere near it.
This is consistent with guidance that yogurt with live active cultures can improve lactose digestion, one of the better-supported probiotic-food claims out there, plus the broader role of soluble fibers like apple pectin in supporting stool consistency.
Ingredients
- 1.25 cups (300 g) plain live-culture yogurt
- 1 apple, peeled, cored and diced
- 2 tbsp water
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
- 2 tbsp rolled oats, lightly toasted
- 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
Method
- Put the diced apple, water and cinnamon in a small pan and cook over low-medium heat, stirring now and then, for 6 to 8 minutes until the apple is soft and the liquid is syrupy.
- Let the stewed apple cool for a couple of minutes so it does not curdle the yogurt.
- Toast the rolled oats in a dry pan for a minute or two until fragrant and lightly golden.
- Divide the yogurt between two small cups or bowls and spoon the warm apple over the top.
- Finish each with the ground flax, toasted oats, and a small drizzle of honey if you want a little more sweetness.
